083 413 2228 Cycad Forest—Modjaji Nature Reserve.
This is the largest growth of a single cycad species, Encephalartos transvenosis, in the world and the most primitive living seed-bearing plants known. It is also the most famous and largest cycads, reaching a height of 5 to 6 metres. Some of the trees in the reserve have exceeded the exceptional height of 13 metres showing how well they are protected. These plants are living fossils and are said to be 50 to 60 million years old. They are both protected and endangered.
Another significant phenomena related to Modjadji are the unique cycad forest boasting a dense 305 hectare, the largest natural concentration of a single cycad species in the world. This is situated just above the royal enclosure of Modjadji. These cycads was stringently protected by generations of Modjadji's and it is because of their vigilance that the protection of this sacred plant has been assured and that eventually it has led to the area being declared a national monument in 1936 and proclaimed a nature reserve in 1985 and is now part of South African heritage.
